20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEAS
Jules VERNE / Adaptasyon : David KERSNAR & Althos LOW
Based on Jules Verne’s landmark works of science fiction, this critically acclaimed adaptation reveals the true history of Professor Morgan Aronnax’s adventures as a prisoner of Captain Nemo, master of the submersible war machine, Nautilus. This adaptation casts Professor Aronnax as a woman who has hidden her gender from the public at the behest of the French minister of science and is accompanied by her loyal friend, Brigette Conseil. At the end of the American Civil War, a handful of Union Army POW castaways in the South Pacific discover Nemo—long thought dead—still haunting his now-crippled vessel. A debate arises between the men and the aged captain: in his years-long private war for revenge, was Nemo justified? Morally responsible? “Did I do right—or did I do wrong?” Launched by that question, the play chronicles the interwoven histories of Aronnax and Nemo—their clashes of will confronting monsters without and within—as they voyage beneath the world’s oceans to the unclaimed tundra of the South Pole.

AUDREY OR SORROW
Marina Carr
In an old house somewhere in Ireland, a young mother watches over her sleeping baby. But, in Marina Carr’s dark and dangerously funny new play, Audrey or Sorrow, nothing is as it seems.
Audrey or Sorrow will bring audiences on a shape-shifting, time-bending deep dive into a world of family secrets, unimaginable loss, ghosts behaving badly and the endless pull of the sea.
The play exemplifies Marina Carr’s work to date: storytelling that tunnels deeply into the complicated contours of family dynamics; pushing the boundaries of love, power and desire.
It will be the first of two world premieres of work by Carr, marking her 60th birthday and her third year as the Abbey Theatre’s Senior Associate Playwright. Directed by Caitríona McLaughlin, this co-production also celebrates Landmark Productions’ 20th anniversary.

THE BEAUTIFUL FUTURE IS COMING
Flora Wilson Brown
Flora Wilson Brown's second play THE BEAUTIFUL FUTURE IS COMING was presented as part of the 2024 Footprints Festival at Jermyn Street Theatre.
“Can you feel it? Something is hanging in the balance – ready to fall.” 1854. New York. Eunice sits in what will become Central Park and wonders if something is going horribly wrong.
2027. London. Clare falls in love as the streets begin to flood.
2100. Svalbard. Ana hears a baby crying in the seed vault.
The world is ending, sure. But what happens in between?
"This production provides a brilliant example of how to make theatre that might be considered political or activist without ever becoming preachy or didactic. Wilson Brown’s focus on the human side of the story […] is miles more powerful than any facts or figures could ever be, and far more inspiring. This is especially true of the piece’s ending: the writer delicately balances hope and despair with a gut punch ending that is unexpected and moving without feeling gimmicky."– Broadway World

CARDINAL ERROR
Alistair BEATON & Dietmar JACOBS
Leading British playwright Alistair Beaton (Feelgood, Fracking for Future) and German satirist Dietmar Jacobs (Extrawurst) join forces for a sharp and satirical comedy about the Catholic Church… in a play that’s not just entertaining, but certainly also provoked.
“A shining example”! This is how the Catholic dignitaries of a small German diocese see themselves. Clean, with few church exits and absolutely scandal-free. In addition, the ambitious bishop presents himself as an energetic enlightener and clean man who resolutely fights all the dark shadows of the past. No wonder that he is to be rewarded by the Vatican with the biggest event in the 700-year history of the diocese: At the end of his visit to Germany, the pope will visit the diocese, bless the most famous relic of the diocese and spend a night in the episcopal palace . But during the preparations for the Holy Father’s visit, a scandal is brewing beneath the seemingly perfect surface, which threatens to sweep away not only the bishop but also the diocese like a tsunami. From now on, there is only one thing that applies to the leading figures: the scandal must be prevented by all means. With absolutely all…

CRY IT OUT
Molly SMITH METZLER
Four months ago, Jessie was a corporate lawyer with a glamorous Manhattan life. Today, she is in dirty yoga pants, covered in breast milk, trying to comfort a screaming newborn. Isolated in a sleepy Long Island suburb while her commuter husband works long hours, Jessie is desperate to talk to anyone besides Food Network. So when she spies a fellow new mom and neighbor, Lina, at the local Stop & Shop, she vaults over the cantaloupe to introduce herself. Happy to have found each other, the two moms agree to meet for coffee during naptime in the sweet spot behind their adjoining yards where both their baby monitors get reception, and a fast friendship is born. Jessie and Lina may be from vastly different financial backgrounds—Jessie is Ivy-educated and of the manor born; Lina has a night-school nursing degree and terrible credit—but they have one huge thing in common: they’ve been cracked open by the love they feel for their newborns. One coffee quickly becomes a daily coffee, as Jessie and Lina laugh through the highs and lows of motherhood. But their intimacy is punctured when a stranger who lives in the mansion up on the cliff appears in the yard, asking if they would include his wife, a new mom who is having “a hard time,” in their coffee klatch. Reluctantly, the duo tries to become a trio, but with very mixed—and surprising—results. After all, this is a town where the haves and the have-nots live in very close company; up on the cliff is Sands Point, one of the most expensive Great Gatsby-esque neighborhoods in the whole country. How could that woman possibly be having a “hard time”? A comedy with dark edges, Cry It Out takes an honest look at the absurdities of being home with a baby, the power of female friendship, the dilemma of going back to work, and the effect class has on parenthood in America.

DAY OF THE LIVING
Amy Draper (Proje Tasarım) & Juliet Gilkes Romero / Müzik: Darren Clark
An ensemble leads us into the theatre, welcoming us with songs. A conch shell sounds as we hear the verbatim testimony of trainee teacher students from Ayotzinapa Normal school in Mexico who survived the violent abduction of 43 of their classmates by men with guns. We will hear their voices throughout the play. Meanwhile, Tlaltecuhtli, Mother Earth, makes her way across the stage as we hear about ancient Mexico and how its earth was formed out of war. As the play continues, we follow the Fernández family preparing a birthday piñata and giving a very special present to ten-year-old Chavela, whose brother, Rafael, is amongst the students who have been forcibly ‘disappeared’. Chavela’s devout mother, Graciela, and Manolo, her troubled grandfather, argue about whether to turn to religion, or protest, as victims of the country’s drug war litter the town square and mass graves are found in the surrounding hills. So begins Chavela’s descent into a reality which she is forced to confront. Chavela’s grief unleashes visions which begin to invade her life. She conjures a heart pounding wrestling match, where she meets Rafael once more as a heroic Lucha Libre fighter ‘El Venado’ (the Stag), battling corrupt officials, injustice and finally the Goddess of Cocaine, Señora Blanca. As Chavela, Graciela and Manolo struggle to come to terms with injustice and corruption, they try to continue with daily life under the watchful eye of the police, drug traffickers and the dancing figure of death. Rafael was taken alive and they want him back alive. The fight for justice continues.

FRINGE BENEFITS
Donald CHURCHILL & Peter YELDHAM
Fringe Benefits is a comedy for three men and four women. Isobel and Colin, Jim and Brenda, are arranging to go on their annual holiday to Torremolinos. However, both the men and the women have decided (separately) they would rather not go: the women because they are sick of it, the men because according to Jim, two very attractive office girls would appreciate the pleasure of their company – in East Croydon. Both the women and the men suggest plans are changed, but neither sex divulges the real reason. Complications inevitably ensue – particularly after the arrival of not only Fiona and Doreen (the two office girls) but also of young Richard who, having a preference for (as he not very tactfully puts it) “older women”, comes in search of Brenda – and then turns to Isobel as being “older still”.
The action of the play takes place in the Hudson’s maisonette in Baron’s Court, London.
Fringe Benefits was first staged under the title A Far Better Husband with the legendary British comedian Ronnie Corbett on a UK National Tour in 1975 and then at the Whitehall Theatre, London, from August 26th, 1976 with the popular actor Brian Rix and the title Fringe Benefits.
The play has subsequently been staged in many countries including France, Germany, Poland and South Africa – in Poland and South Africa the play was staged as a “sequel” to WHEN THE CATS AWAY by Johnnie Mortimer and Brian Cooke with the appropriate change of names for the two married couples.

FUTURELAND
Lola ARIAS
What makes teenager undertake a lonely and dangerous journey to an unknown land? What situation leads parents to send their own children away in order to save them? What does it tell about the society we live in that millions of children cross the borders risking their lives on journeys that last for months or years in search of a future?
50% of the refugees in Europe are minors, and many of them are unaccompanied. Children and young people that come to Europe are moved by the instinct to survive, and are confronted with a system that protects them only temporarily. According to the German asylum law, no unaccompanied minor can be deported. In other words, children are safe until they are eighteen. But what future are we giving to these children if they are afraid to become adults?
Futureland is a science-fiction documentary piece with teenagers between 14 and 18 years old, who came to Germany by themselves from Afghanistan, Syria, Somalia, Guinea, Bangladesh. They crossed the world by foot, by boat, hidden in a truck and sometimes by a plane. Now they live in Berlin surrounded by social workers, youth welfare employees, tutors, and other young people like them, all coming from very different cultures.
They are teenagers who landed in a new world where they don’t know the rules. They are in a period of grace: they can stay but they don’t know for how long. They do constant auditions to prove that they deserve asylum, a chance in school, a place in a group of friends. They are in between cultures, in between children and adult and in between past, present and future looking for their own identity. Futureland brings together different visions of what is to come – born out of the imagination of those who have experienced more than many of us in a lifetime.

I LOVE TO EAT
James STILL
Before Julia Child and long before today’s proliferation of cooking shows, there was James Beard, the first TV chef. He brought a love for fine cooking (and a sense of humor) to the small screen in 1946 and helped establish an American cuisine based on fresh ingredients. Famous for quips like, “If ever I had to practice cannibalism, I might manage if there were enough tarragon around,” Beard went on to become America’s first “foodie,” and the award bearing his name is still the prize most coveted by chefs across the country. Larger than life (literally and metaphorically), American culinary icon James Beard was a complex, entertaining, beloved and frustrating friend and mentor to many. Openly gay even though his primary audience was middle-America housewives, Beard always kept his phone number listed and famously took calls from anyone anytime who needed a little cooking advice. I Love to Eat (a love story with food) invites you to meet the man described as “the face and belly of American gastronomy” in this solo play that imagines a late night in Beard’s Greenwich Village home where he shares recipes and cooking tips, gossips, spills secrets, fights loneliness, talks to his best pal Julia Child on the phone, sings a song and even reenacts some of the wilder moments from his landmark 1946 television show, in which he infamously shared the screen with a certain cow named Elsie … A few lucky audience members also get to dine on one of Beard’s signature hors d’oeuvres—lovingly prepared right in front of us as part of the play.

LOVE AND MARRIAGE
Donald CHURCHILL
It’s a case of two’s company and three’s a crowd in this irresistible romantic comedy.
Long term players on the merry-go-round of matrimony, Tony and Truth have come through 20 years together to be strong contenders for the perfect couple. They can surely compete with friends Gerry and Anne, who think money can buy them love, but with the very married and very flirtatious Bill in the picture, will their vows of love, honour and obey still count for something or have they become a hollow promise?
Wed lock or wedded bliss? Ball and chain or hearts and flowers? Smart and wonderfully funny, with a bittersweet veneer and characters that ring incredibly true, LOVE AND MARRIAGE is a distinctly modern take on married life that will touch everyone who has ever said or contemplated ‘I Do’!
Tony believes that honesty is the best policy in marriage. It’s a philosophy that has earned him marital stability with Ruth for twenty years. He may have had some dodgy times with his business, he may be feeling a few rheumatic twinges but he’s in the prime of life, isn’t he? Bill’s motto for a lasting marriage is to lie to his wife every day. She knows he’s a ladies man but she loves him anyway. Then there’s Gerry and Anne. Gerry is rich and successful. But can money buy them love?
Tony’s equilibrium takes a knock when he gets a call to say Gerry and Anne are in London and want to come over. Tony will have to cancel his golfing practice with Bill, which gives Bill the excuse he’s been waiting for. Ruth has something she needs to tell Tony. But how will he react? Could this be the end of at least one beautiful friendship?
Donald Churchill’s comedy is a funny and poignant look at relationships and what really makes couples stay together.
LOVE AND MARRIAGE was first staged at Greenwich Theatre under the title THE PERFORMING HUSBAND with a cast that included the popular actors Pauline Yates as Ruth and Ronald Hines as Tony.
Adam Faith, one of Britain’s top pop stars who had a string of 11 top 20 hits starred in a UK National Tour of LOVE AND MARRIAGE in 2003. Unfortunately, during the tour Adam died of a heart attack in the early hours of the morning, a young woman more than thirty years younger was in bed with him. Subsequently, Leslie Grantham, star of the BBC drama series EASTENDERS, took over the role of Tony in the National Tour.
The first foreign language production of LOVE AND MARRIAGE was in Slovakia.
LOVE AND MARRIAGE is written for three actors, TONY, 42, RUTH, an elegant woman of 40 and BILL, 43. There is also ANNE a non-speaking role. It should be possible for a female member of stage management to appear in the role.

ME AND JEZEBEL
Elizabeth FULLER
This funny, poignant piece traces Fuller’s true-life account of the events of summer 1985, when screen legend, Bette Davis, came to the Fuller’s home in Connecticut to stay for one night and ended up staying for a month.
It all starts when a mutual friend brings Bette Davis to Elizabeth Fuller’s house for dinner. Davis calls the next day to thank Fuller for the lovely dinner (although the chicken was a bit raw), and to ask if she could possibly stay with her for a couple of days (no more than three) while a hotel strike runs its course in New York City. Fuller, a life-long fan, can hardly refuse. But trouble soon begins as Davis arrives with a station wagon full of belongings and, complaining that the front stoop needs work, moves right in, Davis, quickly soon dominates the lives of Elizabeth and her husband, John, and their young son, Christopher, who begins imitating Davis’ tones and worse, her language; as does Elizabeth, who desperately wants to form a real friendship with her idol and show her they are kindred spirits. Elizabeth tells Davis stories of how she and her grandmother, Old Ma, used to go to Davis’s double features and write her fan letters. Almost oblivious to the Fuller family, Davis decides what they will have for dinner, when they will go to the beach and plainly speaks her mind on everything from child-rearing and spiritualism to Paul Newman and, of course, Joan Crawford. As the days progress, it becomes clear that Davis thrives on conflict and high tension, and that she is only truly happy when she is stirring things up. The month vacillates between highs – watching JEZEBEL on the late movie together – and lows – when John threatens to move out if Davis doesn’t leave. Then, on the 32nd day of her stay, the hotel strike ends, and Davis departs as quickly as she arrived. She leaves behind a gracious thank you letter and, as Bette Davis herself might have said, one hell of a good story.
ME AND JEZEBEL was produced at the Actor’s Playhouse, in New York City, on December 7, 1994 with Elizabeth Fuller playing herself and Louise DuArt as Bette Davis. Earlier in August 1994, the part of Bette Davis was played by Randy Allen, at The Ballroom, in New York City. The play has been produced extensively through the US. There was a tour of Australia 2004/2005. First foreign language production opened in Prague October 11th 2005 under the title A PEARL OF HOLYWOOD AND ME. Brighton Festival, May 2008. Subsequent European productions in Germany, Greece, Poland and Slovakia.

MRS. ORWELL
Tony COX
Sonia Brownell, a renowned beauty, is caught in a love triangle between the dying George Orwell who wants her as a wife, and the mercurial Lucien Freud who wants her as a lover. Sonia wants the best of both worlds and gets it.
The action of the play takes place in Room 65 of University College Hospital where George Orwell is dying of TB and too weak to hold a pen.
Despite his skeletal and waxen pallor, however, his mind remains lucid, and his literary contacts are kept in good order by Sonia Brownell with whom he falls in love.
Sonia for her part, responds to Orwell’s feelings, not with the love he so desperately needs, but with sweetness, honesty, humour and compassion.
Eventually, however, Orwell – who hopes to salvage time from the wreckage of his life to write another novel – proposes marriage to Sonia, and she reluctantly agrees because he says he will get better if she marries him.
Thereafter, her vivacity and laughter bring warmth and comfort to the last months of Orwell’s life.
Sonia, however, is no saint and has a weakness both for alcohol and sex, especially with the mercurial 28 year old Lucien Freud, a friend of Orwell who is engaged in making a ‘last’ beside portrait of the writer.
Plans are afoot for Freud and Sonia to take Orwell to a clinic in Switzerland, but before they can do so, he dies of a massive haemorrhage and drowns in his own blood.
Freud and Sonia, out dancing in a night club, miss the urgent telephone calls from the hospital and by the time they get to Room 65, Orwell’s body has been e oved and the only evidence of his having been there are the bloodied sheets.
Sonia, for the first time, realises the depths of her love for Orwell and breaks down with grief. She is, however, comforted by the prospect of being the extremely rich widow of a great literary man.
And who is to say this wasn’t her intention all along?

The unassuming location of a dock extending out onto a small lake serves as the backdrop for five different stories. On a cool autumn night, Jake arrives with Holly at a secluded spot. The couple feels an immediate connection to this place as if it were put there just for them. Things seem perfect until Anne and her date, Lyle, arrive. On another day, early in the morning, Beth has plans to spend the day with her dad at their favorite fishing place. She has high hopes for catching some sunshine, a few fish, and her dad’s fading memories. The third story involves Al, who arrives at the dock with his family and has high expectations for their family canoe trip. In the fourth story, Cory and Liberty are having a picnic lunch out by the lake, but a realization about tuna-fish sandwiches sends a shockwave through their relationship and brings about questions of who they are and what lies ahead for them. In the fifth story, Stanley escapes the hardships of his life to blow off some steam on the dock when Sidney, his 6-year-old sister, arrives. All he wants is for her to go away, but she insists on staying with him. The entire ensemble gathers on the dock together for the final scene. SISTER regards her own life as a mistake, starting with her birth that nearly killed their alcoholic mother and having parented HER from age five, she continuously switches from love to bitter envy, convinced that things have always been so much easier for her little sister. But as the weight of her troubled life bears down on her sibling, it transpires, things have never been that straightforward.
The narrative unfolds through flashbacks to their childhood and then on towards a seemingly inevitable conclusion. The terrible tragedy that broke up their dysfunctional home leads with faltering steps on to a young adulthood peppered with moments of hope before the slow slide into addiction take hold. Kathyrn O’Reilly’s dialogue is unrelenting and clawing in a way that a desperate, symbiotic relationship can be. Yet the savagery is balanced by their childhood imagination, which turns the few trees in the park into a forest, the acorns into food when they are hungry.

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE* (*SORT OF)
Isobel McARTHUR
This unique take on Jane Austen’s beloved novel is an adaptation like no other, drawing on over two hundred years of romantic pop history, and featuring six young women with a story to tell.
You might have seen them before, emptying the chamber pots and sweeping ash from the grate; the overlooked and the undervalued making sure those above stairs find their happy ending.
Of course, these women have always been running the show – after all, ‘You can’t have a whirlwind romance without clean bedding’ – but now the servants are also playing every part. Let the ruthless matchmaking begin!

RIGHT WHERE WE LEFT US
Rebecca Jade Hammond
I thought I would be grafting and working on it.
Pursuing it until I breathed my last breath.
My ambition and drive was that concrete.
But ambition will…
Ambition will kill you.

Fast forward years later, a world reset and changed forever they return to where they left it. One an award-winning writer, the other adopting a child and putting faith in crystals.
The spark is still there, electric and dangerous. But how do you heal once you've been burned? Right Where We Left Us is a lyrical and witty three-hander and a heartfelt examination of what happens instead of “happy ever after”.
Right Where We Left Us was first produced by Chippy Lane Productions at Chapter Arts Centre in September 2022.

SEX TIPS FOR STRAIGHT WOMEN FROM A GAY MAN
Matt MURPHY
Robyn, a straight-laced, sexually repressed university student and new host of a book forum called Rendezvous with Alternative Authors of the Modern Era (RAAME, pronounced “ram me”). We see two interview chairs and a stand with a book on it as Robyn enters nervously (it’s her first time hosting) and tells us that the book up for discussion is Sex Tips for Straight Women From a Gay Man, but she’s not sure how to go about discussing this kind of material. Then blissfully gay coauthor Dan comes in to help Robyn out. He thinks that the best way to talk about his book is not to read and analyze it academically, as Robyn wants to do, but to enact his sex tips onstage — with the help of the forum’s audience.
And so begins an uproariously funny series of interactive demonstrations of saucy, sexual advice. Audience members chosen by Dan join the cast onstage to help illustrate a range of amorous situations, from relatively tame tips, such as how to flirt effectively at a bar, to meatier morsels, such as how to manually arouse a man in four easy steps (for which, see the subhead of this review; all audience members are encouraged to practice this technique by means of a rolled theater program, and Dan patrols the aisle with a video camera to make sure everyone is trying). Assisting Robyn and the audience is handsome and hunky Stefan (Andrew Brewer), a shy, reserved “scientist” who finds himself reluctantly unclothed at various times throughout the show as he gradually learns to embrace his inner stripper. He’s the scrumptious eye candy that frequently draws your attention away from the matters at hand.

SOMETHING ROTTEN!
Karey KIRKPATRICK & John O’FARRELL / Müzik ve Şarkı Sözleri : Wayne KIRKPATRICK & Karey KIRKPATRICK
Welcome to the Renaissance and the outrageous, crowd-pleasing musical farce, Something Rotten. Created by Grammy Award-winning songwriter Wayne Kirkpatrick, and successful screenwriters Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell, Something Rotten was lauded by audience members and critics alike, receiving several Best Musical nominations and hailed by Time Out New York as “the funniest musical comedy in at least 400 years”.
Set in the 1590s, brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom are desperate to write a hit play but are stuck in the shadow of that Renaissance rock star known as “The Bard.” When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first musical. But amidst the scandalous excitement of opening night, the Bottom Brothers realize that reaching the top means being true to thine own self, and all that jazz.
Something Rotten features large song and dance numbers, and a wacky cast of over-the-top characters, each given his or her own special moment in the show to shine. Throughout its Broadway run, the musical received a show-stopping standing ovation from audiences… in the beginning of the first act! It’s become clear that “nothing’s as amazing as a musical,” so don’t miss your chance to bring this history-twisting tale to your stage.

TEA FOR THREE : LADY BIRD, PAT & BETTY
Eric H. WEINBERGER & Elaine BROMKA
What is it like for a woman when her husband becomes the president of the United States—and she is suddenly thrust into the spotlight? This witty, sly and deeply moving script explores the hopes, fears and loves of Lady Bird Johnson, Pat Nixon and Betty Ford. In three scenes taking place in the family quarters of the White House just prior to the end of living there as the wife of a president, each of the women confides alone to the audience. Secrets are spilled about their early years, their husbands’ rise to power, their romances with the men, their unique paths as wives in the White House, and their feelings about imminent retirement. Lady Bird Johnson, while preparing a tea for Pat Nixon, defends her husband’s quirks but finally admits to herself, “Politics is his oxygen.” Mrs. Nixon, drinking tea alone in her room on the eve of her husband’s resignation, works on her mail, picks at her food and guardedly recalls happier times before exploding in anger about Watergate and the political world. Betty Ford is discovered reading a TIME magazine in her bathrobe. Forestalling preparations for tea with Rosalyn Carter, Betty lightheartedly recalls past escapades, but eventually admits to being quite lost about life after the White House. Defiantly pushing back the fear, she sails out the door to meet Mrs. Carter. Each of the three portraits becomes intimate, by degrees, as the women wrestle with what Pat Nixon called “the hardest unpaid job in the world.”

She is a passionate teacher who commutes every day to educate the mainly black students of an inner-city school. On the face of it, life runs smoothly. But Ray seems to hanker after change. He leaves his Mercedes in the drive, and takes to riding the public bus through the African-American neighbourhoods of the city – the only white guy on the bus. Ray becomes a regular on the same route as Shatique – a young, black single mother who is studying to become a nurse, and determined to make a different life for her 9-year-old son. They strike up a relationship. But what does Ray really want from Shatique?
